Lyme Regis will commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day Landings and the Battle of Normandy that led to the liberation of France and Europe with a series of events including a torchlight procession and beacon lighting. D-Day was the largest naval, air and land operation in history and paved the way for the liberation of North-West Europe and ultimately, victory in the Second World War. ‘Operation Overload’ saw around 4,000 ships and landing craft set down 132,500 troops on beaches in Normandy, France and 6 June 2024 will mark the 80th Anniversary of this historic event. Join the Torchlight Procession to mark this momentous occasion to celebrate peace, liberty and reconciliation and to remember the courage and sacrifice of those Allied soldiers who took part in what was the largest amphibious operation in the history of warfare. The procession will start from the Gin Shop on the Cobb at 9pm and proceed along the seafront to Cobb Gate and on to Gun Cliff. Lyme Regis will then join towns, villages and cities across the world to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day by lighting a beacon at Gun Cliff at 9.15pm (approx) in celebration of the ‘light of peace’ that emerged out of the darkness of war.
