The Alexandra named in The Telegraph’s top 250 UK hotels

We are thrilled to share that the Alexandra has been recognised in The Telegraph’s list of the top 250 hotels in the United Kingdom. The list, compiled by a team of sixty travel reviewers, assessed each hotel based on its location, character, service, facilities, rooms, and dining.

To find ourselves named alongside some of the country’s best-known properties is a moment of great pride for our family-owned business here in Lyme Regis, which, this year, celebrates its 125th anniversary as a hotel; a fitting tribute to the team who keep the place running day to day, and to the loyal guests who have made the Alexandra what it is.

What The Telegraph said

Travel writer Rosalyn Wikeley reviewed the Alexandra for the list, describing the hotel’s maritime elegance and pointing to its setting as a stylish base from which to explore the Jurassic Coast. ‘The setting could hardly be better,’ she wrote.

Particular mention was made of our cliff gardens, the Garden Lookout Tower, where small groups can dine in seclusion; alongside our private chapel and the suntrap deck set apart from the main house.

The Lookout Tower has become a destination in its own right, often booked for intimate dinners and small celebrations. The chapel, originally built in 1884 by the Rev. Edward Peek and returned to the hotel’s care when we bought Poulett Hall in 1999, sits at the heart of the building’s long story. The deck, almost hidden away above the gardens, is one of the spots guests look forward to returning to year after year.

Among the best Dorset hotels

The Alexandra was one of nine top-rated Dorset hotels included in the list. Joining us are The Nici in Bournemouth, The Pig on the Beach at Studland, The Priory at Wareham, Summer Lodge at Evershot, Dorset House here in Lyme Regis, Louma near Bridport, Plumber Manor at Sturminster Newton and the Seaside Boarding House at Burton Bradstock.

It is great to see Dorset’s incredible hospitality scene get the spotlight it deserves. Seeing so many of our local properties recognised together is a huge win for our community. Congratulations to all involved!
